WHAT WE DO

We are a full-service design and customization shop committed to creating extraordinary automobiles.

FABRICATION SHOP

BODY SHOP

ASSEMBLY/ENGINE SHOP

This is the place it all starts.  In the fab shop we build the foundation for a great ride.  From chassis to sheet metal we cut, weld, grind, and make things fit.  Stance and attitude is perfected here.  Our fab team can handle chops, channels, sections, and any other metal work. We also do all the mock up here including, suspension, brake, steering, and engine set-up.

Things are starting to shine.  The body shop houses some of the best body men and painters around.  They’ll finalize the fit, hinge and gap, and block it down smooth.  After that comes color.  Whether it’s a solid, metallic, or candy, they have it covered with a finish like glass.

Bringing it all together.  Here we put the pieces of the puzzle together.  From installing complete wiring harnesses to AC these craftsmen have the answer.  Their detail oriented skills give them the upper hand when it comes to assembly of a project.  We also do fuel injection swaps and engine tuning here.  Everything gets dialed in, double checked and ready to roll.

IN THE SHOP

ABOUT

Like most custom car shops, Carolina Rod Shop started out as a hobby. Building cars in garages, carports and heck, even under shade trees. It didn't take long for people to realize that we were pretty good at it; so we turned it into a full time business.

Here's our story...

Glen Dodd met Larry Segars when he joined Tri-City Rod and Custom Car Club in 1985. Larry was a charter member of the club and was working full time at Michelin Tire Company as an engineer. Glen was working full time running Travelier, a business that he started in 1961 in Dallas, Texas.

Larry had a '35 Dodge pick up truck with a 440 engine and Glen had a '39 Chevy Coupe with a 400 small block. The two didn't like each other at first, but became good friends as the years went by.  Faced with being sent to Ohio with Michelin, Larry took an early retirement in 1989. Glen was retired from Travelier and proceeded to talk Larry into opening a Rod Shop with Glen being a silent partner in the business. The business grew and ran smoothly until August, 2001, when Larry passed away from brain cancer.

Glen was faced with a decision to either shut the Rod Shop down or come out of retirement. So, he came out of retirement and took over the company in 2001. Again, the business grew and ran smoothly until February, 2010 when Glen fell through the roof of his shop onto the concrete floor and should have died instantly. According to the EMS, he wouldn't make it to the hospital. According to the doctors, he wouldn't live through the night. Fourteen days later, Glen woke up from a drug induced coma and asked the nurse "What's going on?"

As Glen was lying in the hospital bed for several weeks, he realized that he wasn't doing what he truly enjoyed doing, which was working on cars. Instead he was managing employees. Fifteen of them in fact. He made a promise to himself that if he was able to get out of the hospital and be able to walk again that he would get out of the "employee managing" business and get back to working on cars.

And that's just what he did.

Glen sold the Rod Shop in 2014 to Craig Menke and Michael Medlin.  The two partners have revamped the shop and have it running wide open again with three buildings.  They have a fabrication shop, in which all the metal fab work is performed.  An assembly shop, in which cars are put together and other “clean” work is performed.  And finally they have a body shop, in which they have a crew of the best paint and body men working.  This unique structure allows Carolina Rod Shop to provide customers with services specific to their needs.
